How We Support Babies Starting Solids
Most babies are ready for solids around 6 months, though Raising Children Network(opens in new tab) notes this can vary, and it's not recommended before 4 months. Signs of readiness include sitting up with support, showing interest in food, and being able to move food to the back of the mouth to swallow.
How we approach it
- Starting with iron-rich, soft or pureed first foods
- Introducing new foods gradually, one at a time where appropriate
- Following each family's own pace and any dietary requirements shared with us
- Making mealtimes relaxed, social and unhurried, including for our youngest eaters
Breastmilk or formula remains a baby's main source of nutrition in the early stages of starting solids, with food building up gradually alongside it. If your baby is approaching 7 months and hasn't started solids yet, it's worth a chat with your child and family health nurse or GP.
