If your toddler has ever lined up all their blocks in a row or your kindy child has asked why the moon is out during the day, you’ve already witnessed science in action.
At Milestones Early Learning, we believe every child is born curious. And this Science Week (9-17 August 2025), we’re celebrating that natural curiosity with hands-on experiences inspired by this year’s theme:
Decoding the Universe: Exploring the Unknown with Nature’s Hidden Language
While it might sound complex, this theme is really about something young children do every day: noticing patterns, exploring systems, responding to signals, and asking questions about the world around them.
From babies to kindy kids, science is already part of their play.
Science Through a Child’s Eyes
For babies and toddlers, science might look like:
- Splashing water and watching ripples form
- Sorting colourful blocks into matching piles
- Noticing the change when a cloudy sky lets the sun peek through
For preschoolers and kindy kids, it could be:
- Asking what happens when colours mix
- Observing how shadows move during the day
- Building tall towers, and figuring out why they fall
These small discoveries spark big thinking. And they lay the groundwork for confidence, creativity, and problem-solving - skills every child will carry into school and beyond.
Science, Every Day: Our Lifelong Learning Curriculum
Science isn’t something that happens only during special weeks. At Milestones, it’s part of our everyday approach. Through our Lifelong Learning Curriculum, we create intentional experiences that help children:
- Observe and explore
- Ask “why?”
- Predict what might happen next
- Work together to solve problems
Our Big Thinkers STEM program is designed to engage young minds through play, creativity, and real-world discovery, from ages 3-5.
Science Week in Action at Milestones
Throughout Science Week, your centre will be bringing the theme to life in playful, age-appropriate ways. Children might:
- Explore natural patterns in leaves, shells and animal markings
- Sort objects by shape, colour or texture
- Investigate shadows and light using torches and paper puppets
- Rescue frozen sea creatures from ice blocks using warm water
- Test which objects sink or float, and guess why
Keep an eye on Storypark throughout the week for photos, updates and a peek into what your child is discovering!
Try It at Home: Simple, Fun Science for Ages 0-5
Want to keep the curiosity flowing outside of care? Here are a few easy activities to enjoy together, no special equipment needed.
1. Shadow Explorers (Ages 2-5)
Grab a torch or head outside on a sunny day. Notice how your child’s shadow moves when they jump, wave, or spin.
💡 Try tracing shadows with chalk and see how they change over time.
2. Colour Sorting with Nature (All Ages)
On your next walk, collect leaves, petals, or small stones. Sort them by colour, size or texture.
💡 Even babies love exploring different shapes and sensations, just supervise closely.
3. Mystery Sounds (Ages 1–5)
Hide a few sound-making objects (like keys, a rattle, or rice in a jar). Make a noise and ask:What do you think it is?
This builds listening skills, memory, and the ability to match sound to meaning, all part of decoding the world.
Why It Matters
These simple games aren’t just ways to pass the time, they’re the building blocks of scientific thinking.
Every time your child notices a pattern, tests a theory, or asks a question, they’re building confidence and learning how to think for themselves.
That’s what Science Week is all about, and it’s what we nurture every day at Milestones.
