When the temperature drops, food becomes something more than fuel. For little ones, a warm, nourishing lunch in the middle of a winter day is comfort and care all at once, and at Milestones Early Learning, that's exactly what we aim for. Our 2026 Winter Menu has just launched, and it's been designed with both little bodies and big feelings in mind.
Why Fresh, Onsite Cooking Matters More in Winter
It's easy to underestimate how much a freshly cooked meal does for a child during the cooler months. When food is prepared onsite at your centre, rather than delivered pre-made or reheated, children get meals at their nutritional peak. Vitamins and minerals are better preserved, flavours are fresher, and cooks can respond to what children actually need that day.
Winter also brings with it a natural dip in immune resilience. Warming meals built around vegetables, legumes, wholegrains, and lean proteins give children's bodies the nutrients they need to stay well - iron for energy, zinc to support immunity, fibre for gut health, and complex carbohydrates to keep them going through a full day of play and learning.
At Milestones, our cooks prepare meals fresh at each centre, every day. That means real food, made with care, served warm.
What's on the Menu This Winter
Our winter menu rotates across four weeks and has been developed in partnership with The Biting Truth, Accredited Practising Dietitians who specialise in early childhood nutrition, and our national food partner Woolworths at Work. Every dish is balanced across protein, wholegrains, vegetables, and healthy fats.
Here's a taste of what children will enjoy:
- Vietnamese Beef and Bean Stew (with a Vietnamese Tofu and Bean Stew vegetarian option)
- Mexican Cheesy Beef and Rice Casserole (or Mexican Cheesy Bean and Rice Casserole)
- Minestrone Soup with Bread Soldiers
- Garlic Chicken Veggie Stir Fry with Rice (or Garlic Tofu and Veggie Stir-Fry)
- Italian Pork Mince and Veggie Pasta Bake (or Italian Lentil and Veggie Pasta Bake)
Morning teas and afternoon teas are equally thoughtful, think Cinnamon Pear and Creamy Yoghurt with Crunchy Bran to start the day, and Zippy Hummus with Veggie Sticks, Fruit and Crackers to finish it. Every vegetarian option is as hearty and nutritionally balanced as the main dish, with iron-rich legumes and tofu doing the heavy lifting.
Halal menu options are also available. Please speak with your Centre Manager if this applies to your family.
Try It at Home: Simple Minestrone Soup
One of the most-loved dishes on our winter menu is our Minestrone Soup with Bread Soldiers, a hearty, vegetable-packed bowl that's just as easy to make at home. Here's a family-friendly version to try on a cold night.
Serves: 4-6
Time: 40 minutes
Ingredients
- 1 brown onion, diced
- 2 cloves garlic, crushed
- 2 medium carrots, diced
- 2 stalks celery, sliced
- 1 x 400g tin crushed tomatoes or 400ml passata
- 2 tablespoons tomato paste
- 1 x 400g tin cannellini beans, drained and rinsed
- 1 x 400g tin kidney beans, drained and rinsed
- ½ cup frozen peas
- 750ml vegetable stock (low sodium)
- ½ cup risoni pasta (or small pasta of your choice)
- ½ teaspoon dried oregano
- ½ teaspoon fennel seeds (optional)
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- Wholemeal bread, to serve
Method
- Heat olive oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add onion and cook for 3-4 minutes until softened. Add garlic and cook for another minute.
- Add carrot and celery and stir for 2-3 minutes.
- Stir in tomato paste, then add passata, vegetable stock, cannellini beans, kidney beans, oregano, and fennel (if using). Bring to a gentle boil.
- Add risoni and simmer for 10-12 minutes, until pasta is cooked and soup has thickened slightly.
- Stir through frozen peas in the final 2 minutes.
- Serve warm with fingers of toasted wholemeal bread on the side, perfect for dunking.
Cook's tip: This soup thickens as it sits, so add a splash of extra stock when reheating leftovers. It freezes beautifully too.
A Menu That Listens to Your Family
While the core winter menu has been expertly designed to meet all relevant nutritional guidelines, including the Australian Dietary Guidelines, ACECQA requirements, and Munch and Move, our centre teams consult with families throughout the season. Up to 20% of the menu can be swapped to reflect local preferences, cultural needs, and children's feedback, while keeping every meal nutritionally sound.
Your child's centre displays the full seasonal menu at reception. Speak with your Centre Manager if you'd like to know more about what's being served, share feedback, or discuss your child's individual food needs.
Coming Soon: A Webinar for Families
